What is the NYS 5-hour pre-licensing course?

The New York State 5-hour pre-licensing course is required by the DMV before any first-time driver can take the road test. The class covers defensive driving, traffic laws, alcohol and drug awareness, and safe-driving attitudes. When you finish, you receive the MV-278 (Pre-Licensing Course Completion) certificate — the document the DMV asks for when you schedule your road test.

The 5-hour class is currently held online only — live on Zoom or fully online — so you can complete it from anywhere in Brooklyn. No in-person 5-hour class is available at this time, and you still receive the same DMV-recognized MV-278 certificate.

Here are the options for getting your 5-hour course certificate:

  • Free (5–8 business days): collect it from our office at 1958 Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11210 during office hours
  • $15 fee (3–5 days): sent by regular mail with tracking
  • $20 fee (1–3 business days): sent by priority mail with tracking and delivery
How long do I have to complete the online 5-Hour class NYC?

According to NYS DMV regulations, you must complete the 5-hour online pre-licensing course within 30 days of registering.
